I thought I lost my cell phone today. I was just about to catch the bus home from a little grocery excursion, and suddenly I couldn't find my phone. The pocket of my sidesaddle bag where I usually keep it held nothing but a few old reciepts and a business card or two.I just about flipped.
I went back into the store and asked if anybody had turned in a phone. No. Then I asked them if they had a phone I could use to call my own phone, and to my great relief it was in my bag after all. It was in that funky under-the-flap-but-not-on-the-inside pocket. Heaven knows how it got there. I'm just glad it did.
But those few moments when I thought it was gone for good I just about died. It's not because it's one of those swanky new phones with a ton of games and a camera and an mp3 player or any of that. Really it's the cheapest phone I could find, and a million other peoplehave it. Actually, most of the time I roll my eyes at people who can't seem to detach themselves from the little techno gadgets. But I admit, the moment I couldn't find mine, I couldn't imagine life without it.
Now, to be fair, this is partially because I just don't have a landline. Or, for that matter, a watch. So most of the time that little bundle of electronics is my only way of being contacted, and my only way of knowing what time it is. And I'll tell ya, the fact that something that didn't even exist twenty years ago is that indispensible to me, worries me just a bit.
But for the moment, I'm just glad I have it back. ;)

First and foremost, I absolutely love the icon you used. :) That's a great scene from Ferris Beuller's Day Off, a movie I happen to find funnier each time I watch it. ;)
Second, I know what you mean. I don't ever really think I overuse my cell phone, but a few times I've gone out of town and left it home... those were the longest days of my life. lol I admit, I'm dependent. I NEED my cell phone. Even if only to hold it and know it's near me. lol Like a teddybear.
That picture is exactly how I felt after finding it, Belle. Like if it had a neck I'd strangle it for scaring me like that. LOL
What's sad is that when I first thought it was missing, my immediate instinct was to call a friend of mine and have her call my number. Then I realized I couldn't!
Isn't it hard to imagine how people back in the day lived *without* this elemental gadget? Seriously, what did they do? LOL. I'm protective about my cell. I like being able to reach everyone when I want to reach them.
Glad it worked out! :)
Thanks Ella! And surprisingly, I do know people who manage to survive without a cell phone. My mother for example! But yes, it's hard to imagine life without it, which is what kind of disturbs me. How does something suddenly become "indispensible," when obviously before they existed people managed to survive without them! ;)
